Volunteer Spotlight: Carrot Top

06/04/2025

Jenay ‘Carrot Top’ Wolthausen was first introduced to Ukandu when they attended Camp Ukandu in 2015 as a camper alongside their sibling ‘Big Buddy.’ After being a camper, she was “drawn to the overflowing community of love” and looked to volunteer the first chance she got! Immediately after graduating as a camper, Carrot Top became a Ukandu volunteer and never looked back!

“I remember the summer after I finished my 1st year of volunteering. All the emotions, all the memories, endless love for all the kids, and everything felt so right. And at that moment I realized, I would be volunteering for Camp Ukandu for the rest of my life. The thought came so naturally and so easily, I've never once thought otherwise.”

What are some of your favorite Ukandu memories?

Memories that stick with me forever, are the ones I've had the privilege of sharing with campers in those small but meaningful moments. Sitting next to a camper and sharing a meal with them, really giving them space to be heard. Randomly singing a silly song, and helping a camper feel less embarrassed to be themselves at camp. Even just playing a small game they're passionate about, every moment matters. And I'm honored to be apart of it, big or small these kids deserve to be loved, given the world, and more. My favorite song is of course Ghost Chicken. Every time it's played, you can bet I'll be on top of my chair and "BAWKING" as loud and as proud as I can!

What would you say to someone considering volunteering with Ukandu?

If you're worried about volunteering or if you'd have anything to offer, you've found the perfect camp to help out! The Camp Ukandu community is extremely diverse with countless opportunities, anyone can make a meaningful impact. I've learned that everyone's efforts at this camp can help make positive memories and create that loving Camp Ukandu community. Just do it, and you'll see for yourself. Once you start, you won't be able to stop. The love is contagious.
